Hopkins is Houston’s No. 1 wide receiver and the go-to option for quarterback Deshaun Watson. The Buffalo Bills (2-3) recorded their second win of the season last week against the Tennessee Titans in a defensive struggle that came down to the final possession.

Bills rookie quarterback Josh Allen has struggled the last two weeks after a breakout game on the road in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings. Allen threw for 200 yards and a touchdown and added two more rushing touchdowns to lead the Bills to the 27-6 upset win.

Allen was helped last week by Buffalo’s running game that got going behind LeSean McCoy, who totaled 100-plus yards in total offense for the first time all season. He ran for 85 yards and made a key play on the final drive to help set up the game-winning field goal.

With a win Sunday against the Houston Texans (2-3) the Bills would improve to .500 and firmly place themselves in the thick of the playoff race. If they lose Sunday the hole may be too deep to climb out of for a team led by a rookie quarterback still in the beginning stages of the development process.

Bills coach Sean McDermott has been impressed with Allen’s leadership ability and his competitiveness through the first few weeks of the season. Buffalo signed veteran backup Derek Anderson this week to help guide Allen and to bring some experience to the quarterback room.

McDermott expects Anderson to pay immediate dividends for Allen.

“Josh is a constant learner,” McDermott said. “He loves the growth mindset and embraces that. He has a whole heck of a lot of respect for people who have been around the game. I know with my own career, and I’m sure in your careers, if you’re able to sit down next to someone that has been there and done that before, there’s a lot of value in that, in particular when they’ve had success like Derek has.”

The Bills face a formidable offense that will test their defensive unit that is playing some of its best football of 2018. Buffalo forced three turnovers last week against the Titans and needs to find similar results for the Bills to compete on the road against once of the top offenses in the league.

McDermott said this week that as good as the defense has played in recent weeks the unit is young and still growing.

“We’ve got some young players that are two games more experienced than they were two games ago,” he said. “You’re seeing some of that on this past Sunday, for example, compared to the last two Sundays, with Taron (Johnson) and Tremaine (Edmunds) and then Tre’Davious (White), still a second year player, Matt Milano making big time contributions. We have to continue to work hard and I know they’ll do that. These guys are a group of hard workers that take a lot of pride in their work and want continue to improve, no different than Josh in terms of embracing the growth mindset and approaching the game with a lot of energy.”
